A land of the lotus eaters amid the bloated development of its neighbours, Laos brings together the best of Southeast Asia in one bite-sized destination. There's a timeless quality to rural life, where stilt houses and paddy fields look like they are straight out of a movie set. Magical Luang Prabang bears witness to hundreds of saffron-robed monks gliding through the streets every morning in a call to alms, one of the region’s iconic images.
Thailand's northern capital is an escape from the whirlwind pace of life of its southern rival. Despite the constant arrival of planes and trains full of sightseers, the former seat of the Lanna kingdom is still blissfully calm and laid-back. This is a place to relax after the chaos of Bangkok and recharge your batteries with fabulous food and leisurely wandering. If you don't want to participate in the vast array of activities on offer, just stroll around the backstreets, and discover a city that is still firmly Thai in its aspect, atmosphere, and attitude.

An optional early start will give you the fantastic opportunity to participate in the daily morning rituals of saffron-clad monks collecting offerings of Alms (often in the form of sticky rice) from the faithful residents. This tradition is very unique to Laos, it being the only Buddhist nation still preserving the ritual.Next, you will visit Wat Visoun (the site of the impressive Thad Makmo stupa), Wat Mai (built in 1796 and home to the five-tiered roof of the wooden Sim (chapel) epitomizing the graceful Luang Prabang architectural style), Wat Xieng Thong (with its several roofs sweeping low to the ground) and the National Museum (the former king's palace). You will climb up 350 steps to the top of the Phousi Hill to visit Wat Phu Si to enjoy commanding views for many miles in all directions. You will go back to the hotel for leisure time or you can go shopping at the night market, where hundreds of Hmong vendors display their handicrafts. You will then have another overnight stay in Luang Prabang.
