See the pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx, embark on a 4-night Nile river cruise from Luxor to Aswan, visit the temples of Luxor and Karnak, and explore Abu Simbel. Enjoy premium accommodations and personalized attention from an Egyptologist guide.
Welcome to the timeless land of the pharaohs. On arrival at the Cairo International Airport, we will be met and transferred to our hotel.
After a relaxing breakfast, our Egyptologist guide will take us to Sakkara, part of Memphis's massive necropolis and the burial site of the most ancient Pharaohs. See the Step Pyramid of King Djoser that was designed by Imhotep, the ancient Egyptian architect, in 2700 BC. In the afternoon it’s on to Giza, to explore the magnificent pyramids (the great Pyramid of Cheops, middle pyramids of Chephren and the little one of Mykerinos), considered one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. We come face to face with the enigmatic Sphinx, guarding the pyramids on the Giza plateau. The tour concludes with a visit to the Valley Temple facing the great sphinx then transfer back to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport for our flight to Luxor. Proceed to visit the huge temple complex of Karnak, the largest place of worship ever built over more than two thousand years ago by generation after generation of pharaohs. Walk through the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes to stand among 134 columns of the Hypostyle Hall. After lunch, transfer to our home for the next four nights, the M/S Sonesta Moon goddess. In the afternoon, proceed to the Temple of Luxor, built by Amenhotep III and Ramses II for rituals and festivals, dedicated to the god Amun. Dinner and overnight on board.
Breakfast onboard. Disembark and travel by coach with our Egyptologist guide to the west bank of the Nile. See the Colossi of Memnon then visit the Valley of the Kings, where underneath lies the tombs of 63 of the most important pharaohs in the history of ancient Egypt. Richly decorated and filled with treasures for the afterlife, these include Tutankhamun, Amenhotep IIII and Hatshepsut, the only female pharaoh buried here and whose temple rises out of the desert plain in a series of terraces and merges with the sheer limestone cliffs that surround it. Return to our Nile cruiser for lunch and start navigation to Edfu passing through Esna Lock. Dinner on board and overnight Edfu.
Start the day with breakfast as we cruise along the Nile to Edfu. Disembark to explore the Temple of Horus, one of the best-preserved Ancient Egyptian temples on the Nile. Continue navigation towards Kom Ombo. Afternoon tea is served on the sun deck. Upon arrival, disembark and go to Kom Ombo Temple, the crocodile-headed God of fertility and creator of the world. Return to our ship and head to Aswan.
Today’s sightseeing includes a visit to Aswan’s High Dam, an engineering miracle built in the 1960s. It contains 18 times the material used in the Great Pyramid of Cheops. See the granite quarries which supplied the ancient Egyptians with most of the hard stone used in pyramids and temples including the enormous unfinished Obelisk. Travel by motorboat to the Temple of Isis, rising from the waters of the Nile on the island of Philae. Back to cruise for lunch. Afternoon, depart for a Felucca Ride on the Nile River in Aswan. Return to our Nile cruise ship for dinner and overnight.
Time to say goodbye to the Sonesta Moon Goddess. We board our coach to explore the impressive temples built by Ramses II at Abu Simbel, one of Egypt's most visited sites. Relocated in the 1960's with the building of the Aswan Dam, Abu Simbel is a feat of modern and ancient engineering. It is generally considered the grandest and most beautiful of the temples commissioned during Ramses II’s reign, and one of the most beautiful in Egypt. Transfer to Aswan Airport for our flight to Cairo. Pick up and transfer to our hotel for check in, dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, we are led to the world-renowned Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, which exhibits a collection of over 120000 masterpieces from the predynastic and Pharaonic eras to the Greco-roman period. It includes treasures of the child King Tutankhamen, Pharaonic gods and goddesses, sarcophagi, mummies, papyrus - a mind boggling array of antiquities preserved for thousands of years. Then on to explore the Cairo Citadel and see the great Alabaster Mosque whose interior has a semblance to the Blue Mosque in Turkey. Its minaret is a city icon that can be seen from any part of old Cairo. End in the Khan el -Khalili Bazaar for last minute shopping before heading back to the hotel for our last night in Cairo.
