Leave the bustle of the city behind and head for the spectacular snow-capped High Atlas Mountains. Pass through Ifrane before reaching the great cedar forests of Azrou. Continue up through the magnificent Ziz Gorges past palm-fringed towns to Erfoud, “the gateway to the Sahara Desert”.
Early morning jeep excursion to the sand dunes of Merzouga for today’s highlight - a camel ride as you marvel at the sunrise over the Sahara Desert! Then on to the scenic Todgha and Dades Valley in Tinghir dotted with figs, olives, date palms and castellated mud houses hugging the slopes. Explore the Todra Gorge before heading to Ouarzazate, where we stay for the night.
Ouarzazate is a noted film-making location, w/ Morocco’s studios enticing many international companies. Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Prince of Persia and more than 20 blockbuster movies were filmed here. Entrance to the famous ATLAS Film Studio is included. Also visit the village of Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s finest kasbahs. Then on to Tichka Pass descending past charming mountain villages, dense woods and green fields to the ochre-coloured city of Marrakesh.
Brace yourself for as we see the Menara Garden, the Palais de la Bahia and Koutoubia Mosque. Then proceed to UNESCO recognized Jemaa el-Fnaa and discover a world of mysterious bazaars, snake charmers, street dancers and story tellers amidst the ancient city walls of Marrakesh’s medina. Free time to explore on your own tonight. You may choose a vibrant restaurant on the main square for a slew of classic Moroccan dishes and an arabesque of twirling belly dancers with plates of lit candles on their heads or simply enjoy the ambiance.
Once you have experienced the traditional charms of the country, Casablanca is a fascinating place to return to. A final glimpse of the Mohammed V square, Central Market, the Habbous District, Royal Palace, Anfa villas and photo stops at the Corniche & King Hassan II Mosque. And finally tonight, “of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world”, there really is only one place to be. Join us at Rick’s Café, recreated from the famous movie. Enjoy a hearty Farewell Dinner, no doubt a rendition of “As Time Goes By”. Here’s looking at you kid!
